The Pearl

The Pearl by John Steinbeck is about a family.  The son is stung by a scorpion and it makes him really sick.  Kina and Juana take him to the doctor but the doctor wont see them because they are poor.  They went to find pearls.  The mom prays for them to find a big pearl and the dad finds the biggest one ever.  Everyone comes to look at the big pearl at their house.  The doctor comes to treat the baby, but the baby gets really sick.  The dad tells the doctor where the pearl is and later the doctor tries to steal it.  The mom wants to get rid of the pearl.  She takes it to go get rid of it and the dad beats her.  On his way back he kills a man wanting the pearl and her drops the pearl.  The mom finds the pearl.  She tells the dad they should leave and go sell the pearl.  When they leave people go follow them.  They hide in a cave and the dad tries to kill the people, but one of the guys shoots the baby.  They go back to town and throe the pearl in the water.

The theme of this book is greedy leads to conflict.  the first reason is he got into a fight with his wife because she was going to throw the pearl in the ocean (pg76).  The second reason is their house got burned down because the people were trying to look for the pearl(pg81).  The final reason is he lost his son because they shot him trying to look for the pearl (pg113).  That was my three reasons for not being greedy.

This book did not appeal to me because of the violence and killing.  I would not recommend this book to girls or boys.  I would not recommend to girls because in the book a baby is killed.  I would not recommend this book to boys because in the book a wife gets beat up and let on the beach.  That is why I would not recommend this book.

Book Review 3

The title of the book is The Old Man and the Sea.  The author is Ernest Hemingway.  This book is about an old fisherman named Santiago and his friend Manolin.  Santiago wasn't catching fish so they called him a bad luck boat.  Manolin was fishing with the old man but his parents told him he had to fish on a boat that caught fish.  Manolin still liked to help the old man and talk about sports.  On the 85th day he went out to fish in his skiff.  He caught a big fish that pulled him all the way out to sea.  he fights with the fish for two days until he finally kills it.  The fish leaves blood in the water and it attracts sharks.  He kills as many sharks as he can but eventually can't kill anymore because he lost his harpoon.  The sharks eat the big fish and leave his skeleton.  The old man goes home to sleep and tourists come and see his fish skeleton.  The boy is glad he's back and wants to fish with him again.
The theme of this book is struggle.  The old man struggled for days to catch a fish.  "But remember how you went eighty seven days without fish."  He struggled to catch the marlin and cut his hand with the fishing line.  He struggled with the sharks because they wanted to eat the marlin.
I liked the book because it was about  fishing and not giving up.  I would recommend the book to boys more than girls.  I like the author because one of my favorite quotes is " a man can be destroyed, but not defeated."

Moving to Alaska

It was a sunny day in Saint Marys Georgia.  It was 2010 and I was 10 years old.  I was riding home from school in my dad's green truck.  I walked in my house and my brown boxer, named Chesney was waiting for me.  My dad was sitting on our soft red couch.  I took off my green jacket.  I headed towards the back door to let my dog out.  Then I came inside and the oven was beeping with pizza in it.  Then we sat down to eat and my mom and dad said we got orders to where we were moving, and we were going to Sitka, Alaska, for 3-4 years, or until dad made chief.

"Hey mom," I said.
"Hey, how was school?" she asked.
"Good.  I got an A on my math test." I replied.
"Cool." she said.
"Hey, dad how was work?" I said.
"Good.  I got to shoot new guns." he said.
"Why's the oven beeping?" I said.
"That's your pizza about to be ready." he replied.
"Go walk Chesney please." she shouted.
"OK. Chesney come here." I shouted.
"Bark, bark, bark." he barked
"Hey your snack is ready," she said.
"Sit down we have something important to tell you," he said.
"What is it?" I nervously asked.
"We got orders to where we're moving!" she said.
"Where?"  I said.
"Well son, Sitka, Alaska," he said.
"What?" I yelled.
"Yes and they have no fast food restaurants," she said
"Will it snow?" I asked.
"Yes!" he said.
"When do we leave?" I asked.
"July 16," he said.
"OK, can't wait," I said.

There I was on the road moving to Alaska.  Turns out it snows, but there are no fast food restaurants here.  I like it here because it's fun and you get to walk in town.  Never the less, where ever we move will be our home.

My Personal Legend: Popcorn Maker

Nothing fills my heart with joy like being a popcorn maker.  My earliest memory of it was making popcorn for my class.  I could make popcorn for the rest of my life by working at a movie theater or carnival.  There may be some challenges along the way like learning how to make popcorn and using the cash register, but I can handle them.Making popcorn is my personal legend

To begin with, I remember the first time I made popcorn.  It made an impression on me because even though I had never made popcorn, I couldn't resist the urge to make popcorn.  Then there was the time when I spilled the olive oil in the popcorn.  Just the idea of making popcorn for people makes me dream of being the world’s best popcorn maker.  It has been exciting to me for as long as I can remember.

There are lots of things I could do with my life in order to make popcorn.  For example, I could work at a movie theater or carnival.  People are always looking for people to work at a movie theater or carnival.  Additionally, if I pursue my dream on becoming a popcorn maker, I’ll likely become the best popcorn maker ever.  There are certainly many different things I could do in life to ensure that I can make popcorn as much as possible.

Some may say that there are too many challenges for me to face if I want to be a popcorn maker.  For example there are machines that make popcorn.  Though machines that make popcorn by themselves are certainly no fun at all, I think my love of popcorn making will help me take setbacks like that in stride.  Also, I know that living my Personal Legend won’t happen right away, and I may end up a sports therapist, but as long as I keep my eyes on the prize, I’ll get there.  There will be obstacles, but just remember, “You have to be in it to win it.”

In conclusion, living my Personal Legend of being a popcorn maker will lead to a life well spent.  From the very first time I touched a popcorn kernel, I knew that making popcorn was my first love.  I’ll get to try lots of different ways to embrace life, but becoming a popcorn maker seems like the best one for now.  Other advanced popcorn makers will be obstacles that I’ll encounter, but as long as I remember how much I love the taste and feel of popcorn, I can overcome them.  We only have one life to live, and I can’t think of a better way to live mine than to make popcorn for people.

Perfect Paragraph Practice

 File:Chris Paul camp pc.jpg

Chris Paul is my favorite point. guard Chris Paul came from Wake Forrest university. Chris Paul was the 4th draft pick to the new Orleans Hornets. Chris Paul was then traded to the LA Clippers. While Chris Paul was on the Clippers he learned a move called the cross over which allowed him to get open and shoot. These are reasons Chris Paul is my favorite point guard.
